Winery & Vineyards
Architecture, sustainability, innovation and vineyard in Ribera del Duero
Cellar
Technology for the respect of traditions.
LOCATION
The choice of the place caters mostly to the proximity of the vineyards and the sloping topography in a westerly direction, allowing a perfect orientation of the spacecraft in a production process based on the gravity, breathtaking views on the land and limited industrial impact typical of this kind of building.
two different
volumes
The winery is formed by two volumes that emerge from the hillside, but as half of the building is underground, there is only a part of it is visible.
The industrial process (vintage and receiving initial treatment) and the ageing process are divided in two different volumes. The building is formed by two different parts, though closely related to each other for perfect performance.
A building that limits the environmental impact
Two volumes broken by a passageway to fit the slope and directed the building to the west. A building that limits the environmental impact is a big warehouse in a rural area and find a scale more appropriate to its location.

Vineyards
The vineyard is the essence of the wine. Without a good grape, there can be no great wine.
OUR vineyards
Abadía de Acón owns 48 hectares of vineyards situated in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, 95% planted with the native grape variety “Tempranillo” or “Tinto Fino de la Ribera” , and “Cabernet Sauvignon” (5%).
The majority of the vines are espalier-trained and have an average age of 30 years, although our special wines are made with vines over 70-year-old.
The soil
The soils are chalky-clay with streaks of brown soil and some alluvial parts. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level.
The land and the vine are fertilized exclusively with organic fertilizers (manure from local sheep to avoid foreign diseases). Winter and green pruning, cluster thinning after veraison and a total absence of irrigation result in a production of less than two kilos per vine; a limited production in which all the soil’s minerals and nutrients are concentrated.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
We also refrain from using herbicides or any other aggressive treatments on the vineyards.
Someone once said that “the vineyard is the essence of the wine. Without a good grape, there can be no great wine.” For this reason, the vineyards are exhaustively monitored each year to ensure that the grapes that arrive to the winery are of the highest quality.
